- Cubs’ OF Kosuke Fukudome reached base three times today against the Giants; a walk, a HBP, and an RBI single.
- The Phillies top pick in 2007, Joe Savery, had a very rough first outing. But his pitching coach was pleased with his performance because of how he responded to a tough situation.
- Former Orioles’ top pick Scott Moore is learning 2B in anticipation of a potential Brian Roberts trade. The Baltimore outfield is already pretty well occupied by Luke Scott, Adam Jones and Nick Markakis, so this is probably a good move by Moore.
- Mets’ top prospect Fernando Martinez got one of the team’s only four hits today. It seems former prospect Anthony Reyes is continuing his great spring.
- In his first game of American baseball, White Sox IF Alexei Ramirez went 4-5 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Sleeper alert here if he wins the 2B job.
- Top IF prospect for the Red Sox, Jed Lowrie, would love to man the middle infield with 2007 ROY Dustin Pedroia. In the same article is word that RHP Michael Bowden would get his first look of the spring against Northeastern.

Thursday, February 28th, 2008Phillies Prospect Watch: Savery, Outman, Carrasco
Thursday, February 28th, 2008- Phillies LHP Joe Savery and LHP Josh Outman didn’t mind yesterday’s exhibition rainout against Florida State University, knowing that both young arms would be facing big league competition today against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Clearwater, FL. For Savery, the former Rice Owl standout, this will be his first major league start. Baseball America writes that Outman, while ranked lower than Phillies top prospect, RHP Carlos Carrasco, is more advanced and could wind up in the majors first.
- David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News writes that Phillies P Carlos Carrasco knows about adversity first hand. Ranked by Baseball America as the #54 prospect (and the highest ranked Phillies prospect), Carrasco went a scintillating 6-2 with a 2.84 ERA at A-Clearwater before being promoted to AA-Reading. Many in the organization feel that he has the skills to be up in the big show before the season’s end.
Prospect Joe Savery To Pitch First Exhibition Game
Tuesday, February 26th, 2008Joe Savery, the 19th overall pick in the draft last June, will be starting the season’s first exhibition game, but that doesn’t mean he will get called up during the season according to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News. While the 6-3, 215 pound power pitcher will get a chance to impress onlookers (including manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee) this spring, Savery is only 22 and is scheduled to start the season at Class A Clearwater. As one of the top pitchers (and hitters) in Rice history, Savery could make a big splash in the majors when he finally does get called up in the next couple years.
