Tuesday, March 11th, 2008Maybe It’s Maybin at Center Field
Monday, March 10th, 2008Since coming back from a tweaked hammy last week, Florida Marlin’s prospect Cameron Maybin has been playing well enough to make a strong case for the center field starting gig. He came back last Thursday and immediately showed that he felt no ill-effects from the injury, hitting a single in his first at bat and then stealing 2nd. His speedy performance prompted manager Fredi Gonzalez to say:
“It was like he was never hurt. It’s nice to be 20 again, feeling no pain.”
He has hit in every game since then, going 1-for-3 on Friday and 1-for-3 on Sunday and this spring is batting .294 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, and a stolen base. According to Joe Fisaro of MLB.com, the only thing holding Maybin back is his lack of experience against big league pitchers, as he has only 69 at-bats higher than Class-A. Maybin will be a great source of stolen bases for fantasy owners if he starts, and it looks like soon we’ll have to bump him to the top tier on our 2008 Rookie Fantasy Sleepers page.
Rasmus Goes Yard
Friday, March 7th, 2008- Colby Rasmus did his best Albert Pujols impression and crushed a ball out of the park Friday, and on the very next pitch the real Albert Pujols did the same. The home run was Rasmus’ only hit in 5 at-bats, but at least he made it count. His principal competition for the starting center field job, Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker, went a combined 3-for-5 in the game. Rasmus is batting only .222 so far this spring, but is still a good sleeper candidate at this point.
- The outfield competition in St. Louis isn’t limited to only Colby Rasmus, Brian Barton, Cody Haerther, Skip Schumaker, Ryan Ludwick and Juan Gonzalez. Cards prospect Joe Mather, who last year hit .271 with 31 HRs, 80 runs, and 77 RBIs in AA-Springfield and AAA-Memphis, is getting some good experience in spring training. Unfortunately he probably won’t get a chance to prove himself in the bigs this year because of the crazy depth chart.
