New Feature: Daily Pepper

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

This post marks our new feature, the “Daily Pepper”.  In this feature, we will quickly cover a handful of prospects under one post.  Pepper is that game we all used to play as a pre-game warm up: One person hits quick grounders and liners to a group of fielders standing close by, who then promptly throw the ball back to the hitter, who then hits it back to the fielders…  It’s pretty much the same thing right?

Fukudome Fitting Right In, Expects to Run More

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Imagine showing up for your first day of major league camp only to find Big Z standing next to your locker in your uniform claiming that he’s the only #1 on the team.  Well, that very thing happened to the Cubs prized Japanese prospect Kosuke Fukudome, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. Of course this was just one of Zambrano’s now famous practical jokes.  This is one of the many things the Cubs’ players have been doing to make Fukudome feel more at home on the squad.

In a separate article also by Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, Fukudome explains that he thinks he has better speed than is reflected by his season high 13 SB.  When asked how many bases he can snag in the MLB, Fukudome projected somewhere in the range of 15-20 SB if he’s given the opportunity.  In Japan, nobody in the 3rd spot in the lineup steals bases, so Fukudome was never given the green light.  That’s likely to change during his tenure in Chicago.  With the potential for 20 SB coupled with him hitting directly in front of big Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez, look for Fukudome to be a run scoring machine this season.  If he wasn’t so hyped already, we’d definitely call him one of the sleepers of the season.

Kosuke Fukudome Could Bat 3rd for the Cubs

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Kosuke Fukudome could bat 3rd, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com:

When he was acquired, Lou Piniella projected Fukudome would hit either second or fifth, but lately is leaning toward inserting him third to get some speed and runners on base ahead of Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez.

Fukudome, a career .305 hitter with a .397 on-base percentage, should be a run-guzzling savage in front of Lee and Ramirez. He should provide fantasy owners with 15-20 HRs as well (he hit 34 in 2003, but ballparks in Japan are smaller).
