Lowrie Comes Up Big in MLB Debut

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

The Red Sox recalled top SS prospect Jed Lowrie from Triple-A on Thursday to fill the slot vacated by the injured Mike Lowell.  However, Sox skipper Terry Francona elected to play Sean Casey at first and shift Kevin Youkilis to third as an immediate solution, so Lowrie’s been forced to watch the games from the bench.

That may change after his performance in his big league debut today.  Lowrie went 1-4, but his first career hit was a 2-run single in the 7th inning.  Lowrie finished the game batting in 3 of the Red Sox 5 runs in a comeback victory over the Cleveland Indians.  Unfortunately, with Casey already in competition and Lowell set to return in the not so distant future, Lowrie is really limited to a utility role.  Unless the Sox are rocked by injury, don’t expect Lowrie to have too much fantasy value this season.  He’s their SS of the future though, so don’t forget this name.

Giants’ Bowker Has Stellar Debut, Bocock Getting Comfortable at SS

Monday, April 14th, 2008
  • Rick Eymer of MLB.com reports that John Bowker made his first appearance in the big leagues on Saturday and became the 8th player in Giants history to hit a home run in his major league debut. Bowker had 4 RBIs and another home run in his second game the next day as the Giants went on to beat the Cardinals 7-4. Pretty impressive stuff, and needless to say, the Giants’ lineup could use a little power boost.
  • Brian Bocock has been a solid replacement at shortstop for the injured Omar Vizquel, although his performance at the plate has left something to be desired (.200 with 2 RBIs). Still, he’s played every inning of every game so far this season. Bocock attributes some of his struggles to simply not being familiar with the pitchers he’s faced, so he’s been spending a lot of time watching film of the pitchers he will be facing in upcoming games, writes Chris Haft.

Salcedo’s Real Age in Question

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Add another chapter to the strange story of Edward Salcedo’s journey to the MLB.  First came news that Salcedo turned down a $2.5 million offer from the San Francisco Giants.  It has long been rumored that Salcedo had signed with the Cleveland Indians for $2.9 million.  A page on a Dominican social networking site claiming to be owned by Salcedo made news when a large Cleveland Indians logo appeared in the images section.  Despite all this, the Indians organization remains stout in it’s claims that it has not signed Salcedo.

Now comes word from BaseballAmerica’s Ben Badler that the MLB might be investigating whether or not Salcedo is older than 16.  Furthering speculation is news that three MLB investigators in the Dominican have been fired, including one who was working on Salcedo’s case.  The MLB officials have declined to comment, stating that they must complete their investigation before any findings are revealed.  Salcedo’s agent, Scott Boras, has stated emphatically that all of Salcedo’s documents are in order and prove that he is 16-years-old.  We’ll continue to follow this very interesting story as more news comes out.

Padres Trim Down Roster

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres optioned Chase Headley to Triple-A Portland. Headley hit .349 in 43 at-bats this spring and lead the team with 4 home runs and 14 RBIs. Headley has been sent down to work on his defense. Meanwhile, the Padres don’t have to submit their 25-man roster until March 30th. One prospect left is Callix Crabbe and it appears that the utilityman has a good chance of making the team. Crabbe can play every spot in the outfield and every spot in the infield except 1B. His chances of making the team are only improved by the fact that Jim Edmonds is on the DL.

Player Cuts: Reid Brignac

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Lost amid news of top overall prospect Evan Longoria getting optioned to Triple-A was news of another top Rays prospect getting cut.  Rays SS of the future, Reid Brignac was optioned to Triple-A Durham as well.  It seems the acquisition of Jason Bartlett from the Twins in the Delmon Young trade has delayed the big league appearance of Brignac for a while.  The young shortstop handled the news well:

“I’m not disappointed at all… I just got to go down to Triple-A and keep working until I get where I need to be. They’ve seen me, they’ve seen how I play.  Just going to keep playing hard, keeping working hard and see what happens.”

At only 22, Brignac still has plenty of time to develop his skills and still come up to Tampa as the offensive SS he projects to be.  Even if he does get the call-up this year, he probably won’t be fantasy relevant until 2009 or later.

Mariners Notes: Balentien, Triunfel

Monday, March 24th, 2008
  • The Mariners announced today that they optioned top OF prospect Wladimir Balentien to Triple-A Tacoma. Balentien certainly didn’t fail to impress the Mariners with his stellar spring. He went 15 of 47 (.319) with 9 RBI and a team-leading 3 HR. When discussing why the Mariners decided to demote Balentien rather than keep him with the big league club, skipper John McLaren compared his situation to that of top catching prospect Jeff Clement:

“We don’t want those guys sitting around as extra players. We want them playing on a regular basis.”

With his impressive spring, though, it might not be long before Balentien is getting regular playing time at the big league level. Keep an eye on this talented young OF.

  • While both Balentien and Clement have impressed all this spring, it is another young Mariners prospect that all the scouts are raving about, Carlos Triunfel. The 18-year-old has everyone who sees him calling him a future superstar. While he’s an adequate SS right now, most feel he’ll end up at 3B. And as Larry Stone of The Seattle Times speculates in his article, Triunfel could end up being the long-term replacement for Adrian Beltre as the Mariners 3B when Beltre leaves after 2009.Here’s a quick scouting report from ESPN’s Keith Law, who is very impressed with the Mariners ability to scout internationally:

“He’s an offensive shortstop who is strong and getting stronger, with more room to fill out in the future, as he turned 18 just last month. A right-handed hitter, he puts great backspin on the ball and wears out the right-center gap with searing line drives. His bat speed is plus and he keeps his hip rotation timed with his swing; he transfers his weight a little early, and might need to correct that to reach his maximum power output. His pitch recognition needs work, but the M’s have pushed him up the ladder and he hasn’t stumbled.”

Padres Prospect: Crabbe Still Alive

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

The Padres recently trimmed down their roster to 42. Callix Crabbe is one of the outstanding prospects remaining. He had a big day on Tuesday against the Diamond Backs with 3 hits and a RBI. This spring he has a .405 avg in 42 at-bats with 7 RBIs and a homer. This prospect is a great, versatile player and has obviously made enough of an impression on manager Bud Black to keep him around. Referring to Crabbe, Black said:

“The way he’s played this spring, and the way our scouts saw him last year, he possibly could be deserving of a shot. He’s playing very well. He’s getting his hits, he’s showing his versatility, which is a plus.”

Prospect Watch: Alexei Ramirez

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

UPDATE: Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that Juan Uribe has been placed on irrevocable waivers by the White Sox. Gonzalez speculates that a trade for another 2B could be coming, but based on the below referenced article it seems like Alexei Ramirez would be a great candidate for the starting job. [Thanks to reader Goose for the heads up.]

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun Times reports that International prospect Alexei Ramirez is the talk of the White Sox camp. Ramirez has played so well this spring, and impressed the coaching staff so much, that the Sox are trying to find ways to keep him in the big league lineup. Ramirez’s natural position would be at 2B, but he has the ability to play at SS and OF as well. It seems like Juan Uribe has the 2B spot locked up, so skipper Ozzie Guillen is trying Ramirez in the outfield. Ramirez, who is hitting .341/.350/.526 this spring, is definitely a prospect to watch as a major fantasy sleeper this year.

Giants Prospect Watch: Eugenio Velez

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Giants infield prospect Eugenio Velez is making a strong impression on manager Bruce Bochy this Spring, writes John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. It appears that Velez not only has a good chance to make the 25-man roster, but also to slide into the starting lineup occasionally in a utility role. His speed on the basepaths has been phenomenal, but recently it has been his glove and bat that are drawing attention. After replacing Ray Durham in the bottom of the first inning on friday, Velez had two hits, including a home run off Diamondbacks’ ace Brandon Webb, and made a diving stop on a ground ball that he turned into a double play. The 25-year-old has a league-leading 9 stolen bases and a .357 batting average this Spring.
